1598 First Printing of The Workes of Geoffrey Chaucer edited by Thomas Speght and printed/published by Adam Islip.

Includes The Canterbury Tales.

Contains original illustrations all in good quality.  As far as I know, all errors corrected in the 1602 version are present here.

A few notes:

Thomas Speght was a schoolmaster and an editor of Chaucer’s works. He revered Chaucer and aimed to give him the respect of a classical author.

This is the first edition of 1598 and not the more common 1602 printing.  It was printed by Adam Islip and brought out in three impressions originally based on John Stow’s edition of 1561, but with some noteworthy additions including one of the first essays on life of Chaucer in English.

Arguments to every book are included along with explanations of old and obscure words.

Two books never before printed are included here: The Floure and the Leafe and The Isle of Ladies (these are erroneously attributed to Chaucer and were for centuries after).

It was the first edition to include editorial apparatus and to present Chaucer as a learned and authoritative poet. It influenced later editions throughout the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries.
