During the 1870's there was a shortage of circulating coinage out west. In an attempt to solve the problem, Nevada's senator, John Jones, introduced the Twenty Cent Piece. Because it was similar in design to the Seated Quarter, it was easily confused, and abandoned after just two years, 1875 and 1876. It was minted in Philadelphia, Carson City and San Francisco. The Philadelphia mint continued to strike proof only issues in 1877 and 1878.
