We’ve recently rediscovered an 1857 half dollar sunken along with the SS Republic, and graded by NGC respectively. We have received plenty of interest and questions with this coin and we would like to take a moment to put this coin in the spotlight!  

What Makes it Special? 

The SS Republic Shipwreck Effect 1857 Half Dollar is one of the most fascinating numismatic finds in American history. It is more than just an old coin. It is a physical piece of the past that tells a story of trade, disaster, and rediscovery.

The SS Republic was a steamship that sank in the year 1865 while traveling from New York to New Orleans. The ship carried passengers along with a large shipment of gold and silver coins that were meant to support the rebuilding of the South after the Civil War. During the journey, the ship ran into a violent hurricane off the coast of Georgia. The storm caused the vessel to sink. Although many passengers were rescued, the cargo was lost beneath the ocean for more than 130 years. In 2003, professional deep sea explorers located the wreck and recovered thousands of coins.

Some of these recovered coins were dated 1857 and were later certified with what is known as the Shipwreck Effect label. This label is assigned by coin grading companies like NGC when a coin shows signs of long term exposure to seawater. To qualify, the coin must still be authentic and recognizable, but may display some effects of its time underwater such as corrosion, discoloration, or surface marks. The coins are carefully cleaned and preserved without removing the natural effects caused by the ocean.
