The value density of a precious metal is the price of that metal per unit weight (traditionally measured in troy ounces).[1] As of Nov 21st, 2025, the current value density of gold is $4,063.20/ozt, making our 2 oz gold bar worth $8,112.40 in melt value. In comparison, the current value density of silver is $49.43/ozt, making this 100 troy ounce bar worth only $4,943.00 in comparison.[2]

In result, gold is 80 times more valuable than silver! That fact alone is pretty incredible when you compare the size of the two bars. As you can see above, the 2 ozt gold bar is only slightly bigger than a dime, whereas the 100 ozt silver bar is much bigger than a typical marker. It goes to show that looks can indeed be deceiving.

Gold is also much more dense than silver, at a whopping 19.32g/cm3, compared to silver's density of 10.49g/cm3. Gold's high density is due to its unique molecular structure, making it very malleable and durable in most environments.[3] In addition to being one of the rarest metals, gold is used in many different applications outside of jewelry and collecting. For example, gold is often applied in a thin layer on building windows to reduce heat from the sunlight, and used as an electroplating material on copper parts needed in various everyday electronics. [4] The amount of applications alone makes a gold bar like above even more valuable.
