Indian Head / Buffalo Nickels

A unique coin by design, the Buffalo Nickel (also known as Indian Head Nickel) is very popular among coin collectors. It was designed by James Earle Fraser and was minted from 1913 to 1938. The coin features a profile of an American Indian on the obverse side and an American Bison on the reverse side.

There are 2 main types of Buffalo Nickel: Type I, where the buffalo is standing on a mound and Type II, where the buffalo is standing on a line. The coin is made of 75% copper and 25% nickel and was minted in Philadelphia (no mint mark), Denver (mint mark D) and San Francisco (mint mark S).

One of the most popular coins in this series is the 1937-D three legged buffalo nickel where the buffalo is missing a leg. The value of buffalo nickels is determined based on the condition of the coin, whether is circulated or uncirculated, and the year it was minted.
